Breaking

The year 2020 is characterized by two most remarkable events. These  events has affected negativity on  the economy and the perception of the citizens towards the government.

COVID 19 and the ENDSARS protest are the major events that would not be forgotten so soon in the history of Nigeria.

The Social media space has provided a significant platform upon which Nigerians have been able to exray the fact that religion and ethicity are tools used by our leaders to separate  disintegrate instead of uniting us.

In the University of Calabar, there are so many social media platforms created to inform and educate members of different Associations and Unions. These platforms has never experienced a flood of comments and reactions from members  regarding SSANU and her activities in recent time compared to what was seen  as reactions to a post on 23th December, 2020 by Comrade Joseph Eteng, SSANU-UCB Chairman.

Comrade Joseph Eteng took to  many Social media platforms to register his concern in a manner that got serveral condemnable, reprehensible and culpable  reactions and comments by members of the University community due to the manner he presented it.

This derogatory  and distracting statement against the VC who has recorded tremendous achievements in 23 days after assumption of office was CONDEMNED totally by SSANU members .The VC who is regarded as a savior and Messiah send to redeem University from decay and rot has recorded  achievements in just 23 days in office which has endeared her to the members of the University community and beyond.

Consequently, many stake holders have commended and congratulated her.

see some  comments and congratulatory messages to the Vice Chancellor for the bellow:

1 CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE FIVE (5) NEWLY APPOINTED ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTORS!

The joy and expectation of every practitioner is in reaching the peak or near peak of his/her career or profession. The peak of the Administrative cadre in the University of Calabar, over the years, has been the position of the Registrar which can only be occupied by one person with a five year single tenure. All others, no matter how sound and eminently qualified they may be, some times end up as Deputy Registrars, that is, remaining in that position until retirement or death do them part. The frustration usually associated with this, is better imagined than experienced.

Today, while congratulating the five newly appointed Directors in the persons of: Mrs Uduak Akang - Director, Council Affairs, Mr Michael Monity - Director of Schools, Mrs Ikposhi - Director, Human Resources/Establishments, Pastor Gabriel Osang - Director, Academic Affairs, and Dr (Mrs) Hannah Oboho - Director, General Administration, l  also, in a very special way, thank and congratulate the Vice Chancellor - Prof Florence Obi, for actualizing her  mission as a visionary Administrator (as contain in her Mission Statement), even within her first 20days in office, by teaming up with the Registrar and Council to unbundle the Registry for greater efficiency and productivity.

This, to me, is a big plus and highly commendable.

Now, the new Directors who have been Deputy Registrars, some for over 13 years, will henceforth breath fresh air and fully grease the engine for full capacity production.

May God bless, the Vice Chancellor, Council, and the Registrar for this very remarkable feat.

Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations!!!

2.APPRECIATION!!!

I am using this forum to register my sincere appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence B. Obi for lifting an age long bar, fashioned by individuals within the system to perpetually nurture and encoueage stagnation and frustration of senior Administrative Officers. If I can recall correctly, the clamour for Directorate System in the non-teaching arm of the University dates back  the era of Prof. Kevin Etta, Prof. Ivara Esu, Prof. Bassey Asuquo, Prof. James Epoke to Prof. Zana Akpagu. The Registrars then were Mr. E. J. Akpan, Mr. E. E. Effiom, Barr. (Mrs.) Margaret Uya, Dr. (Mrs.) Julia D. Omang and Mr. Moses Abang. The issue of Directorate System became a very contentious matter to the extent that at one time our co-servants through their members in Council presented a Brief to Council condemning the need for Directorate System. They claimed such creation would erode the finances of the University and make the University go bankcrupt. That was just a gimmick to continue to frustrate the Administrative Class. But when all hope was lost, God sent a Redeemer in the person of Prof. Florence B. Obi to salvage the situation. Within the very first month, precisely three weeks from inception of her Administration, she created five Directorates to ease the saturation of senior Administrators and decentralise the job in the administration for a better and faster service delivery. Invariably, this Vice-Chancellor has done what five other Vice-Chancellors could not do. That is the basis for my appreciation. She was ordained to do it otherwise she would have gone the way of others. I pray God to order her steps and grant her the heart and grace to transform University of Calabar to an Institution where staff welfare shall be a priority as well as research and teaching. Congratulations our Visionary Vice-Chancellor. God bless you and your family. Merry Christmas Madam.

3. Am in LOVE with this supersonic chief executive officer (VC) of the university. Kudos ma'am

4.She (VC) keeps beating my imagination daily.

5. The VC have already Made history within few weeks in Office, I give her kudo especially as a Woman with good vision of what Men's  Vice-Chancellor can't do. More Grace to her and God will Continue to give her Wisdom for betterment of UNICAL Staff.

6.THE DIRECTORATE SYSTEM: A MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENT BY PROF FLORENCE OBI (By A.O. Ochelebe)

The Directorate System was the dream of every Registrar, every administrative and professional staff and all men of goodwill in the University of Calabar yet every attempt to introduce it at relevant quarters was resisted with an inexplicable vehemence by persons who found joy in the frustration of others. The pursuit of the unbundling of the Registry through the Directorate System for greater efficiency was  reiterated in the vision statement of the present Registrar . It must be noted that while the Directorate System remained a taboo and impossible task in Unical hitherto, it's a system that has been embraced by many Universities within and outside Nigeria and it is working well.   We therefore commend the Prof Florence Obi's Administration for achieving this uphill task in the twilight of her Administration by putting in place ten Directorates; five each in Registry and Bursary. Posterity will vindicate her for toeing this path of righteousness as the University would witness more efficient and effective service delivery in the years to come. This is a pointer to the many good things to expect from the present Administration. Does this confirm the assertion that women are better leaders than men? Only time will tell.

Amidst these encomiums poured on the VC, Comrade Joseph Eteng's Post which was described to have been composed at a JOINT without a MEETING, surfaced  the social media platforms.see it  below:

BREAKING NEWS THE UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR VICE CHANCELLOR

Chairman SSANU UCB comrade Joseph Eteng observes with dismay on the issue of the University Of Calabar workers welfare as a priority. on Unical Demonstration secondary school/ Unical Demonstration primary school and other outstanding welfare matters. The school fee of the staff children in Unical international Demonstration secondary school/ Unical Demonstration primary primary school is very high, even when the Federal Government of Nigeria has taken over the payment of salaries of the staff in the school and is being used as a laboratory for faculty of education.  SSANU UCB frowns and urge the Vice Chancellor to reduce the staff school fees, from 40,000 naira in the secondary school to 20,000 naira and 5,000 naira in primary school for staff children based on the current salary half payment by IPPIS. SSANU UCB also reminds the Vice Chancellor that there is outstanding promotion arrears unpaid, unpaid salaries of employees, double pension deduction which audit is ongoing and Christmas palliative unpaid in this season of yellow tie, University of Calabar workers have been neglected in the scheme of things in terms of payment of their benefits, SSANU UCB will not continue to guarantee industrial harmony on campus, if this staff welfare demands are not treated with despatch. A stitch in time saves nine, An jnjury to one is an injury to all, and To be fore warned is to be fore armed.

Comrade Joseph Eteng, Chairman SSANU UCB.

Immediately after the above post, fireful  comments started pouring in,some said he wanted to contest for PTA chairman that is why he didn't ask for the PTA fee of #16,000 to be reduced by the VC.

See the top 20 reactions from ssanu members whichI compiled from different platforms below; (Names withheld, except for those who included their names)

1 I love this Christmas season reawakening of SSANU on this regard but this should have been done during the last administration. ''If face no fear face''

When members  lamented so much about unpaid allowances and other benefits SSANU was quite, some people were selected and paid promotion arrears while others got nothing, SSANU was aloof.

we heard about federal government palliative, SSANU never responded wether it was a rumore or fake.I love the awakening from slumber in this season of celebration.

It is visible to the blinds and audible to the deaf that this Administration is staff friendly and welfare conscious, in less than a month, we can see milestone achievements.

I would advise you don't use this approach ,it is too early. We are yet to hear you paid a courtesy call on the new VC who is a record breaker. She is a mother with listening ears, she is ready to work with the new leadership of SSANU come 2021 for industrial tranquility and congruity in the University.

You would be surprised that she would immediately reduce  the school fees of staff school and demonstration school because she is one of the pioneers of the vision of  those schools.

Even the unpaid allowances and others, we are sure would be looked into gradually.

Pay a courtesy call first Comrade. Let us hear the outcome.QED

2 This is not timely it will definately loook like a witch hunt most times it is good to consult union stakeholders before certain actions note the new VC has to take stock and settle to work my stake is purely on unionism

3.Chaiii,my dear, the level of our Union leaders sycophancy now wears agbada. It's so annoying that their mouths were shut all the while. What happened to the noise about our pension refund???,the tables were turned, mouths sealed as palms were greased!!. ABEG MAKE WE HEAR WORD JARE. MAKE NOBODY JUST WORRY NMA OOO. WISDOM IS HER SECOND NAME,SHE KNOWS WHAT TO OBVIOUS,IT IS EVIDENT IN THE THINGS SHE HAS DONE SO FAR. MAKE UNA CARRY UNA SYCOPHANCY GO SIDDON,IT WONT WORK THIS TIME. MTCHEEWWWW! My darling woman leader how Christmas nah

4.Comrade Joseph Eteng ur time for notice me is over.you are  a  very funny person, have u finished the share of palliative given to u by the former management and u still need more, unfortunately Prof Florence Obi the God send VC is a woman of integrity whose interested is on sanity please it too early allowed her to focus

5 I REALLY LACK WORDS, GOD KNOWS. WHAT HAPPENED THAT THIS STRONG WARNING DIDN'T COME UP DURING ZANA'S REGIME, A MAN WHO WAS NOT STAFF FRIENDLY ? PLEASE CALM DOWN FOR THIS WOMAN,SHE IS A MOTHER.  SHE KNOWS WHAT WE'RE PASSING THROUGH IN THAT SCHOOL AND IM SURE SHE'LL ADDRESS IT.

6 I have not seen what SSANU has sent to the Vice-Chancellor as demands so I will withhold my comments for now. I did write on this platform that all the Unions who became dumb even up to November 2020 would be delivered and they would begin to find their voices in December 2020. It has come to pass. I wish to advise our Unions to exercise maturity and always consult their members before they present demands on behalf of members. We shall never again be used to achieve their personal gains. I advise SSANU to allow this Vice-Chancellor to settle down to work. She is already working and working with direction. She might even touch most of those areas the Union could not talk about with her predecessor. Let's not behave like the proverbial tortoise that was thrown into the toilet pit and it endured the smell for a time without complaint only to shout and prompt the people who came to rescue it eventually to do it fast because it was dying of the smell in the pit. Finally, I advise the Vice-Chancellor and Management not to try to control any Union on Campus. Allow them free hands to operate while Management discharges it's aspect of the social contract within it's resources to foster a sustained labour harmony on Campus. Staff are wiser and shall not allow any Union to ride through their back to achieve their selfish ambitions. On behalf of the voiceless and helpless segment of staff we pass a Vote of Confidence on the Vice-Chancellor and pledge our support to her Administration to the extent that she remains staff friendly. God bless University of Calabar.

7. HMMM, WONDERS SHALL NEVER END. IS JOSEPH ETENG WAKING UP FROM SLEEP? WHERE WAS HE WHEN WHEN ALL THESE MATTERS WERE NOT ADDRESSED BY THE FORMER ADMINISTRATION,? HE COMPRISED THE WELFARE OF SSANU MEMBERS FOR PERSONAL AGGRANDIZEMENT. HE SHOULD NEVER THREATEN OUR AMIABLE VC WITH INDUSTRIAL ACTION IF HE COULD NOT DO THAT IN THE PAST 4 YEARS IN OFFICE AS CHAIRMAN OF SSANU. HE SHOULD LEARN TO LICK HIS WOUNDS.

8. Joseph Eteng I want to let you know that your usual strategies of using SSANU members for your selfish interest have failed you this time around, those your evils ways of gaining weight of cheap popularity for the second term in office will not work again for you , you also want to be  university of Calabar demonstration secondary school PTA chairman, what do you have to offer over there,we now understand who you very well and we will never allow you go over there to destroy the good work that have been put on ground,i will advice you to tender an apology to the good people of SSANU members and the the university community at large

9.Hmmmmmmmm! I am not sure this is coming from our brother, Comrade Joseph Eteng, Chairman, SSANU-UCB. If it is, let him think again. I plead!

10 Copied!

I have not seen what SSANU-UCB has sent to the Vice Chancellor as demands so I will withhold my comments for now. 11.SSANU- UCB lost its essence in the last five years. This was largely due to your personal interest overriding the interest of this great Association. SSANU members were denied lot of benefits, including statutory rights to benefits such as; 2016 promotion, salaries arrears, etc. You indeed, went underground at a time you were to take the front trenches, thereby exposing your footsoldiers to bombardment by the last administration.

Suffice it to say, the present SSANU under your leadership , lacks the requisite moral right to make demand of any sorts. Therefore, this Your "breaking news" appears to be *FAKE and UNTENABLE*. This is because the burden of leadership freely given to you by SSANU was sold five years ago !

12.Comrade Joseph Eteng ur time for notice me is over.you are  a  very funny person, have u finished the share of palliative given to u by the former management and u still need more, unfortunately Prof Florence Obi the God send VC is a woman of integrity whose interested is on sanity please it too early allowed her to focus

13 I'm surprised to hear that  a man called, Joseph Eteng is  still a staff of the university, of Calabar, for  over five years. He disappeared from the university community. Only to appear when a   Messiah has come to rescue us from  teeth of lion. Politics of yesterday differ from that of today.

14 A drowning man looks for anything he can hold onto for near survival.

Our dear VC Prof. Florence Obi is a woman of many parts, her emergence as VC is divine. She cannot be compartmentalized, ostracized and marginalized by those seeking for recognition.

Inside the past few months of her administration, she has  shown clearly that her vision to place Unical internationally ,as a citadel of learning and research cannot be compromised.

She cannot be distracted, she cannot be intimidated.

Let us all "touch elbows with her "and support her even in our daily prayers.

May her zeal never flag.

Hahaha chairman welcome back from ur journey of greed but for this administration you have fail ma is an up right woman

15 Pls the Union should give this God's sent Vice chancellor time to settled. She has promised to carry all the Unions along including staff welfare of our dear workers. She is a Grass rooter that knows our plights. Prof Florence Obi is working tirelessly to actualised all her programmes and mission. Pls no distractions to this promised keeping Vc.

The leader of integrity group, has this to say:

16 THE UNGODLY THREAT DISHING OUT THIS MORNING BY JOSEPH ETENG AGAINST THE VICE CHANCELLOR PROF FLORENCE OBI ; At this point, I call on the rest of the ssanu exco to immediately issue a disclaimer to denounce this ungodly and unprofessional statement and threat by a supposely union chairman Joseph Eteng against the vice chancellor prof Florence Obi. This ssanu exco has no option than to distance themselves from this madness of Joseph Eteng who just woke up from a beer parlor to issue a threat to our vice chancellor. This exco must issue out a statement to condemn this Joseph Eteng's madness, AND GO FURTHER TO IMPEACH HIM IMMEDIATELY, otherwise we will believe that they are all in agreement to embarrass this vice chancellor who by the grace of God has brought freedom and fresh air to our university. The rest of the exco must act now, otherwise we will stay on this matter and we will ask this exco to resign if they fail to issue a statement to distance themselves from Joseph Eteng's coup against our vice chancellor. This rubbish by Joseph Eteng is too early to tolerate. Mr integrity

17 STILL ON THE MATTER - JOSEPH ETENG'S THREAT TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR PROF FLORENCE OBI !! The integrity group humbly appeal to our vice chancellor prof Florence Obi not to receive this ssanu exco to her office when they pretend to come for a courtesy visit to her nor to have any dealing with them until the rest of the exco members issue a statement to denounce this madness of Joseph Eteng against our vice chancellor and immediately impeach him. If this is not done by the rest of the exco members, to show that they are not in support of Joseph Eteng's threat to distabilise your government, then ma, you may be dinning with the devil within you without knowing. We stand shoulder to shoulder with them to impeach Joseph Eteng immediately so that your government will have a smooth run, and our university workers will enjoy dividends of your good governance. Thanks so much ma.

Mr integrity.

18 In my earlier response to the publication on one or two platforms where it appeared, I said I wasn't sure the piece came from him and that if it did, he should think again. I so pleaded. However, I still suggest Comrade Joseph Eteng, our SSANU Chair, should consider punishing a disclaimer appropriate and now. He could say that an enemy of his publish that cheap, ill-omened, inciting and unfortunate denunciation  using his "expensive" name in order to discredit or expose him. I so advise now because the act is not only ill-conceived but also inauspicious, and I am still not too sure he, Eteng, can sit down at this time and conceive the thought of not only writing but publishing such gibberish also. The act is indeed ignoble and calamitous. I so submit.

19 IF I HAVE EVER SEEN A HYPOCRITE IN MY LIFE, DISHONEST AND CORRUPT, IS THIS MAN CALLED JOSEPH ETENG. LET HIM TRY THE NONSENSE HE IS THREATENING ABOUT, WE WILL PUT HIM TO WHERE HE BELONGS. RUBBISH

Finally, The integrity group,An Elders forum who's interest is to restore sanity in SSANU has called on Comrade Joseph Eteng to tender apologize to the VC and SSANU members.

see the comments below:

20.AN ULTIMATUM TO THE SSANU EXCO, STILL ON THE MATTER OF JOSEPH ETENG'S THREAT TO DISTABILISE THE ADMINISTRATION OF PROF FLORENCE OBI !! The integrity group hereby gives the ssanu exco led by Joseph Eteng, till January 2021 when the school will be reopened to issue a disclaimer, distancing themselves from Joseph Eteng's threat to the vice chancellor prof Florence Obi, and they must apologize to the university workers for the insult and trauma this ungodly threat has caused to the university workers. The other members of the exco, to show that they are not part of this evil plot to distabilise the administration of prof Florence Obi, must immediately call for exco meeting and place Joseph Eteng on suspension or impeach him. IF THIS IS NOT DONE, THE INTEGRITY GROUP WILL CALL FOR SPECIAL SSANU CONGRESS WHEN THE SCHOOL RESUMES, AND PASS A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENT AGAINST THE ENTIRE EXCO AND REMOVE THEM FROM OFFICE. WE DID IT BEFORE, AND WE WILL DO IT AGAIN. Please let this ssanu exco note that their tenure of office had already expired since September 2020, and that they are running an illegal exco that is not recognised by law. Therefore for this exco to continue to be relevant, and recognised by the workers, they must do the needful by suspending Joseph Eteng from the union or impeach him. We have the capacity to contend this Joseph Eteng's madness and proof to him that prof Florence Obi's administration is not and will never be like the last administration where Joseph Eteng was running riot with corruption, collecting bribes left, right and centre and sold the workers welfare to the last administration for his personal gains. He was using the same trick he is trying to use now to intimidate the vice chancellor so he can get money from her, just as he did to the last administration where he had to be collecting admissions and sold them out to make money. He collected employment and sold them out to his many concubines. He sealed his conscience with hot iron and robbed the university workers of their welfare. We will not give him a chance again in this administration. Therefore this exco must act now, otherwise we will show them the way out as soon as the school resumes. We are not ready to be led by an illegal exco whose tenure had expired since September 2020. We therefore protest and appeal to our vice chancellor prof Florence Obi not to recognise this present illegal exco until they do the needful by suspending Joseph Eteng and apologizing to the university workers for this embarrassment. Thanks so much. See you all in January by the grace of God. Happy Christmas and prosperous new year.

 The coordinator integrity group

we are still waiting for comments and disclaimer from the EXCO and a public apology from the SSANU-UCB CHAIRMAN.

TAWO BESSONG.
